have any of you painters or sculpters or artists ever had the experience of disliking a particular artists work which you later came to love? for example, when i first read about De Kooning and looked at a lot of his works, i simply hated it. maybe thats a strong word, but i really disliked it astheticly for some reason. but then somehow, after studying his work in a bit more detail, and after doing some more painting myself, i suddenly "got it". now i see something different in the paintings than i saw before. perhaps i have learned how to read one artists visual language.

so my question to you is this: what made you change your mind about that particular artist that you used to hate? did you somehow see into their mind, or into your own? how did this change your art of your approach to art?

well, feel free not to answer this at all; perhaps it is merely a thought experiment. and to all of those of you who might respond, thank you for contributing!

Why was Abstract Expressionist art singled out by the CIA/State Department as an essential weapon of the cultural Cold War? Why did Nelson Rockefeller purchase over 2500 pieces of Abstract Expressionist art and use these paintings to decorate the lobbies of Chase Manhattan banks? And then, why was New York’s Museum of Modern Art so terrifically enthusiastic over this specific art movement? In order to understand the trajectory behind these actions and policies, we have to examine the history and formation of the Abstract Expressionist Movement, what it was attempting to achieve in the world through its art, and how it was consequently interpreted. Perhaps this understanding will shed some clarity on the present day art establishment, and why it functions in its seemingly nonsensical manner

As a painter/writer who does other things, like installation and conceptual art (although I consider all of my work conceptual) I paint to escape from language per se. Speech, text. Explanations, for me, and meaning, are a translation of an entity outside of language. Also my writing seeks to escape from meaning, at least in my reading of it.

Of course painting has its own "language" which we can call color, form, etc. There are many painters but many, many more writers I think and they tend to express themselves in similar ways, on certain levels. I'm trying not to be judgmental but I don't expect everyone to be Beckett or Kristeva. Remarks on Color is another book I like, Wittgenstein, although I admit I don't "understand" it in the way I get de Man.

so how do ya'll feel about this? do you think painters do this to compensate for a lack of artistic technique? do you feel it is part of the sham art has become? do you use this technique at all? if so what do you include in yr work?
